Wednesday, April 28th 2010. I went in for a fairly routine ultrasound on my kidneys. Now why would anyone do that? Well, my endocrinologist wanted to check the kidney function because my blood pressure was a little high. Fair enough!
I must admit, that I was a little concerned about the high BP, because my grandfather had had a stroke and a heart attack, and my dad had had a few heart attacks, and at my age, blah, blah, and all the rest.
And Helene and I were going to Sydney the following Monday. I was going to see some clients and take some of our contract staff out to dinner, and then we were going to just chill out, meet my daughter and son-in-law who were also going up for a trade fair, and generally wine and dine and have a good time. So now was a good time to have the ultrasound, because the next time would be at least in a few weeks time. And it was only going to take about 20 minutes.
Well there I was lying on the table, with goo all over my sides and back. It’s now been over an hour. Mr Ultrasound Technician, who when I first met him, looked like a smile might actually crack his face, now looked more serious – imagine a frown frowning, if you know what I mean. And he’s gone in and out of the room three times and one of the times brought back a colleague, who I assume was more senior – well at least he seemed to frown more than the first guy.
Anyway, they finished. I asked if there was anything the matter, and he said “Your doctor will contact you”.
Your doctor will contact you?? Whatever! That’s what I would have expected! Like duh!! I really didn’t think I’d lie on his table, have goo all over me, have two frowny frownsteins frowning all over me – for one and a half hours, and then never hear from them or my doctor again!!! Hello?
But anyway, so be it. I left and drove home. I’d driven for 5 minutes when I got a call from my endocrinologist. “You need to turn around and go back to the hospital. They found a lump on your kidney and they want to work out what it is”…….. What the??!! ……..
Now, all sorts of scenarios are racing through my mind, as you can imagine, and we’ll leave all that for next time….(to be continued)
